Svilengrad

Svilengrad is located near the point where the three state borders meet - Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey. It is located approximately 70 km, 150 km and 300 km southeast, respectively, of Haskovo, Plovdiv and Sofia, 2 km north of the Greek and 14 km northwest of the Turkish border, 30 km and 265 km northwest, respectively, of Edirne (Edirne) and Istanbul. Svilengrad is one of the gateways to Bulgaria.

Svilengrad is located on both banks of the Maritsa River, in its valley, bounded by the Eastern Rhodope Mountains and the Tundzhan Massif in its part Brannitsa (Sakar Mountain). Here there is a long and shaped gorge that starts from Simeonovgrad and ends at Edirne. The breach is a consequence of tectonic phenomena, but it was shaped and continues to be shaped by the current of Maritsa. At the end of the Pliocene, due to the subsidence of the White Sea, the regressive erosion of the river intensified. Terraces from the former higher level of Maritsa can be found in the gorge. Modern changes due to tectonic phenomena are also observed in the Upper Thracian lowland.
