Drenta village

The village of Drenta is located 21 kilometers south-west of the city of Elena, on the northern slope of the Middle Stara Planina, along the valley of the Veselina River between Mount Glavate in the north and Butorski Chukar in the south, Mount Bozura in the west and the valley of the Lipovnitsa River and Mount Kopnets to the east.

The altitude varies from 517 to 755 m above sea level. The climate is temperate-continental in the low parts and mountainous in the high ones. The village is almost 10 km long and unites the Central part and the Upper part, around which many hamlets are located. Around the central part are the hamlets of Kosevtsi, Dobrevtsi, Lipov rut, Dobroslavovoto (Harizani), Karaivantsi, Razpada, Bozhecka, Livadkite, Brezhnitsi, Bajdari, Lakata, Nenovtsi. The composition of Gorni Krai includes: Danevtsi, Tsonovtsi, Koriyata, Shirokata, Zydivtsi, Ganevtsi, Stanevtsi, Bialkovata, Valchata, Livadata and Chiflika.

In the village there are remains from Roman times. Ancient fortress "Kaleto" is located 1.54 km southwest in a straight line from the center of the village of Drenta. The fortress served to guard the ancient road passing south of it. It was erected on the peak of the same name. Nowadays, there are almost no remains of it. Its size cannot be ascertained without a survey. Its altitude is 716 m.

Theories about the origin of the village are different. The Dobrevtsi hamlet, founded by the boyar Dobri, whose descendants later moved to Lipov rut and Raspada, can be named as the oldest. According to another hypothesis, after the end of the Tarnovo Uprising in 1186, two people settled in the area of Yurtishki Kladenets (north of Lakata). There was a dogwood grove there, after which they named the future village, after which they built their huts. There is evidence of genetic coincidences of the people of Dren with people from Western Bulgaria, which speaks of a large settlement of refugees from there (the area of the village of Dren - Radomirsko, the town of Chiprovtsi, etc.), especially during the periods when there were uprisings against the Ottoman rule. This is especially true for Gorni Kraj, which is populated from the grassy parts of the Veselina River valley. The village of Drenta (the area around Butora) was a camp and a stop for the detachments of Philip Totyu (he is related in the village), Panayot Hitov, Hadji Dimitar, to whom the people of Drenta helped with essentials. The Konar trail passes through the area, which is one of the safest ways to cross the Balkans. There are settlers in Drenthe from the villages of Gorna and Dolna Lipnitsa, where there are localities with the same name - Gorno and Dolno Drenta, also from the village of Kiselchovo (today's Plakovo) during the Karzhali invasions. After the Liberation, a reverse process began and many Drencans emigrated to the plain villages in Northern Bulgaria. For example, many people from Drenchen have settled in the village of Gorski Goren Trambesh, Novo Gradishte, Strelets, etc.
